A box of pretty stationery or an assortment of greeting cards (with or without sentiments) and a supply of postage stamps so that mom won’t have to rush out to stores when it’s time for her to send birthday greetings, congratulatory messages or thank-you notes, etc.
Two prepaid tickets to a concert (for her and a guest), a video or CD of her favorite genre of music or performer(s).
A cozy throw for snuggling, TV viewing or reading on chilly nights.
A small umbrella that will tuck discreetly into her purse or tote bag.
A gift certificate to mom’s favorite store, boutique, hair stylist or manicurist/pedicurist, OR treat her to a day at the spa with a relaxing massage.
A bouquet of flowers, a potted plant, a box of chocolates or lunch or supper at a restaurant of her choice.
A flashlight with an ample supply of batteries in the event of a power outage. When flashlight stands on its end with light shining on ceiling, it becomes a safer alternative to a candle which could cause a fire if not supervised. If flashlight won’t stand on its own, place in tall glass or vase for support.
Gardening supplies: Gloves, decorative planters, bulbs, seeds or ready-to-plant flowers nestled in nursery trays.
Hobby-related products with ‘how-to’ books for beginners (if applicable)e.g., tips on flower arranging, painting with watercolors, crocheting, pottery, etc.
A shopping cart with wheels that folds easily for storage.
Arrange for gardening and/or snow removal services if mom has no one to do these things for her, then pay for those services as per agreement. This may seem like a ‘boring’ gift but it is very much appreciated by folks who are unable to do this kind of work themselves when the yard becomes overgrown with weeds or after a substantial snowfall.
Earrings or a pendant on a chain adorned with mom’s birthstone, or a watch, lapel pin or brooch, or add a charm to her existing charm bracelet (if she has one).
Silk scarf, mom’s favorite perfume fragrance, bath products and body lotions, a cozy bathrobe or slippers, a book lamp, scented candles.
Books or reading material penned by her favorite authors or renew mom’s newspaper or magazine subscriptions.
Enlarge your favorite photo of mom (or mom with family members and/or pet) and present it to her in a beautiful frame.
A small lightweight shovel and a broom for easy clearing of light dusting of snow from balcony and stairs.
If you’re still unsure of what to buy mom, you can always offer her a written I.O.U. for services to be rendered by you or simply ask mom what she wants or needs…she just might need a new toaster!
